As your child’s educational partner, we would like you to meet some of the nation’s leading experts on a variety of topics you are most interested in knowing more about. These experts provide great research and insight in raising empowered and resilient children.

Some of the national experts that have or will be visiting MISD include: 

Scott Polland

Join us as we meet Dr. Scott Poland, a pioneer in school crisis and the author or co-author of five nationally best selling books on raising resilient youth.

Poland has led multiple crisis teams after school shootings and currently is a psychology professor and the Co-Director of the Suicide and Violence Prevention Office at Nova Southeastern University. He was previously the President of the National Association of School Psychologists and is a past Prevention Division Director for the American Association of Suicidology.

His presentation focuses on recognizing and understanding the social and emotional needs of your child, knowing the signs of depression and possible self-harm and learning what you can do as a parent to help your child.

Kathy O'Keefe

 Kathy O'Keefe is the founder of the Dallas area's Winning   the Fight. She is a thought leader and an expert of   recognizing the signs of drug and alcohol use in children   and teens.

 Her presentation focuses on educating parents and   youth about drug use, current drug trends, and what   communities can do to help their youth make informed   decisions. 

Alan November

An international leader in education technology, Alan November discussed what every parent should know about successful parenting in the Digital World.

November was named one of the nation’s 15 most influential thinkers of the decade by Technology and Learning Magazine and was listed as one of eight educators to provide leadership into the future by the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse. His writing includes numerous articles and best-selling books, including his most recent book, Who Owns the Learning?
